Ask The Experts

I have gone to my family doctor about the wound on my toe. He has said that it is a callus that has some blood in it. He said that it should be trimmed by the nurse. I made an appointment with my dermatologist, and he said that it should not be trimmed. Rather, it should have petroleum jelly put on it and let it soak and make the wound soften. The body will continue to heal itself. What do you think?

Thank you for contacting IPFH. We do not diagnose or recommend treatments on line. Since you have gotten two apparently different opinions from medical professionals, you have several choices: You can follow the advice of your family doctor, or you can follow your dermatologist’s advice. The latter is the more conservative and less invasive of the two, and under normal circumstances it is most desirable to first try the conservative, least invasive approach to see if it works. One other approach you might take is to ask your family doctor and your dermatologist to talk and come to a consensus recommendation for you. You might also get a third opinion from a foot care specialist, who may identify other options for you. Whatever you decide to do, we hope you will soon be completely healed.
