Is it possible to have dead skin build up over blisters on my feet? It feels like a blister underneath the dead skin. In times past I would take my razor in the shower and shave that dead skin off until the fluid would leak out. Only this time I can't seem to get to it, and it hurts bad.

Thank you for contacting us. IPFH cannot diagnose or recommend treatments on line. The first thing we would strongly advise is that you NOT use a razor to shave dead skin off your feet. This is especially dangerous if you have diabetes<link> or other conditions affecting the blood flow to your feet, as it can produce a cut or wound that can get infected, resulting in further complications. Although you don’t indicate that you have any of these conditions, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention the possibility. That said, calluses often do form when blisters heal. It is the body’s way of trying to protect you against repeated friction and shear force on your feet. However, the high level of pain that you are experiencing is an indication to us that you should consult a medical professional. Your primary care physician or a foot health professional can determine if there is any underlying condition (in addition to the blister) that may need to be treated, and then take appropriate action. Also, a foot health professional can recommend measures to prevent the blisters from occurring in the first place (IPFH is a strong advocate for taking proactive steps to prevent foot conditions, as that is always more desirable than treating them after the fact). We hope you will consult your doctor or a foot health professional, and that you will soon be free of this condition.
