I have been experiencing nerve pain (burning and pins and needles) and numbness in one of my toes. It isn't all the time and only seems to occur when my feet get really hot. It literally is only one toe. I have been tested for diabetes and do not have it. What else can be causing this nerve pain?

Thank you for contacting us. IPFH does not diagnose conditions or recommend treatments on line. Despite the fact that it is only one toe that is affected, we would recommend that you consult your physician or a foot health professional. There are conditions other than diabetes that can cause neuropathy (see our page on causes for neuropathy/numbness), and it is important to find out if any of these conditions might be causing your symptoms. Presumably you can eliminate the possibility of any trauma that might have occurred prior to the time the toe began to bother you, but you might also recollect your recent days or weeks and try to remember if you stubbed it or anything happened that might be contributing to or causing the pain. Under any circumstance, however, we strongly suggest that you consult a medical professional and get a diagnosis and recommended course of treatment. We hope your foot and toe will be back to normal, and that the pain and numbness will soon be gone.
