Why do I have cracking painful feet and legs?

Thank you for contacting IPFH. We cannot diagnose or recommend treatments on line. We can interpret “cracking painful feet and legs” in several different ways. One way is that you are describing joints or bones in your feet and legs “cracking” or popping. If this is the case, we would suggest that you consult your primary care physician, or a specialist such as an orthopaedic doctor or a rheumatologist, in the event that the condition might be related to arthritis or another musculoskeletal condition. He or she can help determine what is causing the cracking, and provide treatments or suggestions for managing your condition.

Another interpretation is that you mean your skin is cracking, which produces open sores and can be very painful. You can learn more about this condition by visiting our foot conditions page on cracked heels (also called “heel fissures”). Cracked heels and cracking of the skin in other areas generally happens because of dry skin (xerosis). In this case, our recommendation is to consult your primary care physician, a dermatologist, or a foot care specialist. He or she can determine what is causing the condition and recommend medications and/or other steps you can take to alleviate it.

Whichever condition you are describing, we hope you will consult a medical professional, and will soon be free of this pain.
