  • Combined Diet and Exercise Program Improves Knee Osteoarthritis

    A combined diet and exercise program--rather than just dieting or exercising alone-- reduces knee pain, improves function and leads to faster walking speed and quality of life among overweight people with knee osteoarthritis, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

     

    Commenting on the findings, IPFH Executive Director Robert P. (Bob) Thompson, CPed, said, "This is important news for overweight osteoarthritis sufferers. However, we know from our IPFH/NPD National Foot Health Assessment that being overweight and having foot pain are major deterrents to exercise. Following IPFH's integrated approach to fitting footwear can help, since the right footwear, in the right size, can help make feet more comfortable--and walking and similar activities easier."   • Bunions? They’re Not Your Fault

    The largest analysis to date of the heritability of common foot disorders confirms that genes play a big role in whether or not you have those painful protrusions called bunions (hallux valgus). That said, there are still steps you can take to lessen bunion-related pain, including avoiding high-heels and pointy-toe shoes, and wearing footwear properly selected and fitted as part of an integrated approach.

  • How to Protect Yourself from Basketball Injuries to the Foot and Ankle

    The American Academy of Foot and Ankle Surgeons recently posted a link to their article on basketball injuries and advised readers to wear the right shoes. We at IPFH agree that the right activity-specific shoes are important in preventing foot conditions and injury. In addition, we believe appropriate padded socks and any insert or orthotics, fitted together with the right shoes as part of an integrated approach.

  • Why Don’t Most Runners Get Knee Osteoarthritis?

    A new study suggests that people who walk regularly may be more prone to knee arthritis than runners because somehow, running blunts the effects of peak loads on the knees. Thompson, CPed comments, "Whether you walk or run, whether you're at risk for knee osteoarthritis or not, it makes sense to protect your feet by following our integrated fitting approach. Then, whatever activity you do will be easier and safer."

  • Union Leaders Fight for Foot Health

    Union leaders in the United Kingdom are stepping up efforts to "save the health of British people's feet." They're calling on the National Health Service to invest more in podiatrists, who can help people stay active and healthier. IPFH Executive Director Robert (Bob) Thompson, CPed, commented: "UK politics aside, the group is doing the right thing by connecting preventive foot health with overall health, with a view towards saving money for the healthcare system."
