Ask The Experts

I went walking yesterday (on concrete and asphalt) and the middle toe on my left foot is partly black. Should I be concerned and will that go away?

Thank you for contacting IPFH. We do not diagnose conditions or dispense medical advice on line. The symptom you are experiencing is not unusual. It is possible that you traumatized the toe, and experienced some bruising in that area, especially if there is some pain or discomfort associated with the discoloration. It is also possible that the blackened toe is caused by something else. You can learn more about "black toe" at our article on the topic. You can wait a few days and see if it goes away. If there is pain and it persists, consult your primary care physician or a foot health professional. We always recommend that people err on the side of caution, so under any circumstance, we would advise consulting a medical professional if the problem has not resolved within a few days to a week. We hope you will do this, and that you will soon be back to normal.
