Ask The Experts

Do you have any idea why my calf would cramp up while I'm asleep?

Thank you for contacting IPFH. We do not provide diagnostic or treatment advice on line. Calf cramps can occur for multiple reasons. Most often these cramps are related to muscle fatigue and nerve conditions, and often are related to insufficient hydration. They can occur more frequently if you are taking diuretic medications (often prescribed for high blood pressure). Sometimes cramps are a symptom of systemic issues as well. You can learn more about calf pain at our page on that condition.

Your best course of action would be to consult your primary care physician. He or she is familiar with your situation and any medications you may be taking, and can advise you of the likely cause of the cramps and what you can do to prevent them or address them when they occur. We hope you will do this, and that your condition will very quickly be resolved.
