Ask The Experts

I have severe foot pain with bruise-like blotches all over both feet. The pain started 10 years ago. I was driving in the car when both feet suddenly swelled up. They were red and stung as if I'd stepped on a hornets nest. This stinging went away, but was replaced by terrible foot pain all over. I had been extremely active (tennis, gardening, dog walking 5-10 miles daily) for about 25 years until this event occurred. Many doctors and tests revealing nothing. The circulatory test was so painful, I couldn't finish it and had to be helped back to the waiting room. Per the test, my circulation was fine. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for contacting us. IPFH does not diagnose or suggest treatments. We are sorry to hear that you have such pain and that it has been going on for so long. You say you have seen many doctors, but you don’t say whether or not you have consulted a neurologist. If not, you might want to do so, since nerve damage or certain conditions affecting the nerves sometimes produce the symptoms you describe. Other than this, you might ask for a referral to a foot health specialist from your primary care physician, and continue systematically to attempt to have the possible condition(s) that could be causing your pain diagnosed. Sometimes it takes multiple examinations and consulting various medical professionals before conditions can be properly diagnosed. But the most important thing is to persist in getting an accurate diagnosis, because without one, it is difficult for a physician to know how to treat the condition. We hope you won’t give up, but that you will continue to seek medical assistance to diagnose and determine proper treatment options. We wish you the best, and a quick end to your pain.
