Ask The Experts

The last few days my instep is extremely sore just to walk, but going up and down stairs is the worst. I don't know that I did anything to cause an injury. I do have diabetes type 2, but would like to know if I should put ice or heat on the spot to help with the pain.

Thank you for contacting us. IPFH does not diagnose conditions or make medical recommendations on line. Self-treatment can be effective if you are relatively certain about what is causing the pain. However, in your case, you cannot recall any injury or event that might be causing the pain. That being the case, and given that you have diabetes, the best course of action for you is to consult your primary care physician or a foot health specialist. The most important thing is to get a diagnosis. Once the cause of the pain is known, a medical professional can provide treatment to address the condition. You can use our foot pain self-assessment tool to find out what might be causing the pain, but please keep in mind that this is not a diagnostic tool, nor is it a substitute for a professional medical consultation. We hope you will consult a medical professional and that you will very quickly have your pain and soreness resolved.
