Foot Health for Running

(continued)

Footnote: A word about barefoot running and minimalist footwear

Much has been written about barefoot running and minimalist footwear (the two are not the same - see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23314887) and it is a somewhat controversial topic. A recent systematic review of the literature stated that “no definitive conclusions can be drawn regarding specific risks or benefits to running barefoot, shod, or in minimalist shoes.”   If you choose to run barefooted or to use minimalist footwear, consider consulting with a trainer, a podiatrist or other foot health professional, as the American Podiatric Medical Association recommends. Both running styles have potential benefits and risks, and a professional can provide information that can help inform your decision.
