Charcot Foot

Symptoms of Charcot Foot

If you have diabetes or another condition that reduces circulation and sensation to the feet, see your doctor immediately if you have the following symptoms:

  • Swelling in the absence of an injury.
  • Redness that accompanies the swelling.

NOTE: The swelling and redness can be mistaken for cellulitis (skin infection), a bone infection, or deep vein thrombosis.

  • Warmth to the touch, especially in the midfoot
  • Pain or soreness with any of the above.

The most telling signal of the early stages of Charcot foot is swelling. Because of neuropathy, injuries to the feet leading to Charcot changes in the bones may be painless.
