Plantar Warts

Causes of Plantar Warts

Warts are caused by viruses, specifically the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). This virus can enter through perforations – cuts, sores or other open spots - on the skin of the feet. Direct contact between people rarely results in transmission of the virus. Warts usually are picked up from surfaces where people tend to go barefooted – swimming areas, showers, bathroom floors, etc.

People with weakened immune systems are more susceptible to warts caused by HPV, but those with normal immune systems can also contract them. Plantar warts tend to show up more in children and adolescents.
