Sever’s Disease (calcaneal apophysitis)

Prevention and Treatment of Sever’s Disease

Rest, reducing activity levels, icing the heel, taping it, and taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen or naproxen can help relieve pain. Regularly doing stretching and strengthening exercises for the Achilles tendon, calves, and hamstrings can help prevent a recurrence (consult a foot health professional or physical therapist for exercise recommendations).  Wearing supportive shoes with inserts or orthotics and padded socks that reduce stress on the Achilles tendon and calcaneus also can lessen pain and help prevent a recurrence. This is especially important for people with flat feet or high arches. IPFH recommends selecting and properly fitting footwear using our integrated approach.
