Ask The Experts

I have pain and numbness in the balls, heels and toes of my feet, and sharp pain at rest. I am not diabetic. I had embolisms in lungs in July, 2013. Broken up by surgical catheter and heparin. Small clots settled to feet, blocking blood flow to nerves. This is what I have been told is my problem. Taking organic folic acid and Gabapentin 1600 mg. Wear 20-30 mm support hose. Insole arch supports. Still have pain and cannot walk up or down hills very well. Like to play golf, but cannot even walk one hole. Walking to green is pain enough.

Thank you for contacting IPFH. We cannot diagnose or make recommendations on line. We are very sorry to hear that you are in such pain and cannot pursue the activities you enjoy. Since you mention that you have taken blood thinning and nerve pain medication, we assume you are under the care of a physician. We would recommend that you consult him or her and pose your questions. He or she would likely be able to make recommendations on how much activity you can undertake, and the time line on which you can increase your activities based on the progress that you show in your recovery. He or she could refer you to a medical professional such as a vascular surgeon or specialist, or to a therapist who can help you determine the best way to approach pain management, rehabilitation and recovery. You might also consult a foot health professional such as a podiatrist (DPM) who might guide you in selecting specific footwear, measures to take to address your pain, and advice on participation in specific activities. We hope you will consult your physician and soon be on the road to a complete recovery.
