I have pain at the base of my 2nd toe and my doctor wrapped tape around the toe and fastened it on the bottom of my foot. It's some kind of syndrome and I get it a lot. What's the name of this condition?

Thank you for contacting us. We don't diganose conditions on line, but what you describe could be one of several things. Capsulitis of the second metatarsophalangeal joint (MPJ) is a fairly common condition that would cause pain in that area. Essentially, it's inflammation of the ligaments and can be brought on by overloading the joint or increased weight on the joint beyond what it is supposed to bear. This can often be the result of Morton's toe (also called Morton's syndrome), which is also fairly common, and is a condition in which the second toe is longer than the big toe. Pain in that area might also be a Morton's neuroma, which is an enlargement of part of a nerve that typically occurs between the third and fourth toes, just below their bases, but that can also occur in the region of the second toe, causing pain that can be quite intense. These are the two most likely conditions based on what you describe, but to be sure you can ask your doctor to name the condition for you. Once he or she verifies the condition, you might want to research it more. On our web site we have information on many common foot conditions at this link, and there are other resources you can use for research at this page on our site. Thanks again for contacting us, and we hope this information is of help to you.
