Can toe nail fungus spread to other parts of the body?

Thank you for contacting us. Fungal infections in the feet certainly can spread to other parts of the body. The most likely areas where they might show up are the fingernails and in the groin area, since those areas are often exposed to the infected feet (the fingernails from touching the infected area, and the groin area from where clothing such as underwear or pants may be exposed to the feet in the process of putting them on and taking them off). Fungal infections, including toenail fungal infections and athlete's foot are contagious, and can spread not only from one part of your body to another, but also to other people from you, and vice versa. The fungus can live for months on shower and bathroom surfaces, and you can pick it up from these as well. If you have a toenail fungal infection, we would suggest you see a foot health professional or a dermatologist to get it treated. We hope this information is helpful, and we wish you the best.
