Ask The Experts

Have suddenly developed blisters on top joints of toes. Not itchy but painful.

Thank you for contacting us. IPFH does not diagnose or recommend treatments on line. If the blisters have been occurring for more than a few days, you should consult your physician or a foot health professional. He or she will likely ask you what activities you have been doing, if you have purchased and are wearing new footwear, and other questions designed to help determine what, if anything, has changed that might be causing or contributing to the blisters. In most cases, blisters on top of the toes are caused by shear forces from shoes that rub or chafe because they don’t have sufficient volume in the toe box to accommodate your forefoot. Other conditions such as hammertoe can contribute to the formation of blisters on top of the toes. You can learn more about toe blisters at this link. Because you note that this condition is causing you pain and discomfort, we would urge you to consult a medical professional. You don’t mention that you have diabetes or other systemic conditions, but if you do, it is critical to get medical attention quickly. In order to facilitate diagnosis and treatment, you might put some thought into the questions previously mentioned – what if anything has changed for you recently in terms of footwear, any change in activity levels or any activities you have done recently that you don’t normally do, and anything else related to your feet and daily activities that is a departure from your normal routine. We hope you will soon be free of this annoying and painful condition.
